Miss Universe National Costume Presentation

The National Costume competition was held Monday evening at the Rainforest Theatre on Cable Beach, Bahamas. There were quite a number of fantastic costumes that graced the stage, making it very difficult for the judges. The task of choosing a winner in the costume competition fell to the President of the Senate, the Hon. Lynn Holowesko; the CEO of Mailboxes Etc. in the Bahamas and the Caribbean Mr. Gershin Major; Founder of the Bahamas International Film Festival Leslie Vanderpool; artist John Edward Cox; Junkanooer Kishlane O’brien; entrepreneur Elaine Pinder; and retail executive Rochelle Walker of Solomon’s Mines.

The Rainforest Theatre where the competition was held saw fans from around the world. The Philippines had a large contingent of supporters, as did Mexico. I also heard shouts of “Venezuela” and saw several international flags, including one for Sweden.

Some of the outstanding costumes came from:

· Angola, who wore a traditional dress showing scenes of everyday life in Angola
· Bahamas, whose costume depicted the sun that covers The Bahamas
· Bolivia, inspired by a dance of her country
· China, a dramatic warrior
· Colombia, a colorful traditional dress
· Czech Republic, a gown with a butterfly motif
· Ecuador, representing a bountiful harvest
· El Salvador
· India
· Jamaica
· Kosovo
· Mexico
· Namibia
· Nicaragua, which represented the fury of a volcano
· Panama, representing Diablo in pheasant feathers, glass and crystals
· Peru
· Philippines, a colorful twist to the traditional Filipiniana
· Thailand, a combination of the Thai Hill Tribe and traditional costume
· Ukraine
· Venezuela, an exquisite costume which reminded us of the film My Fair Lady

The costumes of both Miss Puerto Rico and Miss USA were sports themes. Miss Puerto Rico boxed her way across the stage while Miss USA revved up heartbeats with her Nascar costume. It was announced that the winner of the Costume Competition will be revealed on Wednesday. On Tuesday half of the contestants will be split into two groups and travel to the islands of Abaco and Harbour Island.

Catch some of the evening’s highlights as 84 delegates sashayed their costumes in front of zillion of viewers around the world.

Pictures will be updated regularly.  Share us your snaps as well. Send it to ilovebdazzled@gmail.com

When Posh does American Idol……..

victoria_beckham_021508In the wake of Paula Abdul’s surprise exit from American Idol, Simon Cowell has called on a old friend to join him on the judging panel – one Mrs Victoria Beckham.

The former Spice Girl has so far agreed to make one guest appearance on the show for a rumoured £155,000.

Her spokesperson told Mail Online: Yes Victoria will be making a “one off” appearance as a guest judge.’

The singing contest is still the highest-rating programme in the U.S. drawing an average of 26.3 million viewers per episode, making the role an impressive coup for the former Spice Girl.

Manalo sisters make history in beauty pageants

PAM AND KAT

Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2009 Pamela Bianca Manalo is ready and excited to compete in the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant – the Miss Universe contest.

With poise, charm and a prayer, Pamela, 22, hopes to become the third Miss Universe from the Philippines.

“I’m on a diet these days,” says Pamela, during a dinner held at the guest house of the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, recently. She became conscious about her figure when her aunt 1968 Bb. Pilipinas International Nini Ramos Licaros, also semi-finalist in the same contest, was bit critical of her weight when she joined the Binibini contest.

“She was laughing! Sabi n’ya ‘ang taba ko raw sa stage,’” recalls Pamela, who stands 5’10” and measures 36 & 1/2-26-36. She graduated advertising at the Assumption College.

These days, Pamela works double time to prepare for the Miss Universe pageant with her mentor, no less than her elder sister former Bb. Pilipinas-World Katherine Anne Manalo, also Top 10 semi-finalist in the 2002 Miss World pageant.

Pamela recalls that prior to the 2009 Bb. Pilipinas pageant, she and her sister were a team in preparing for the contest. She says that they would practice until early morning on poise, Q&A, and other things concerning beauty pageant.

“My sister stays in Forbes Park and we would practice there until early morning. We would rehearse in front of her friends,” Pamela says.

But the hard work paid off. Apart from winning the major title, Pamela also won several special awards, including Best in Swimsuit and Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Award, during the Bb. Pilipinas pageant.

Pamela, former flight attendant, says her Ate is her inspiration in joining the beauty contest. “I owe it to her [Katherine].”

The night Katherine competed in the Bb. Pilipinas pageant at the Araneta Coliseum, the whole family is supportive of her, including parents Rodrigo and Norma Manalo, she says.

“Andun kami lahat sa Araneta and we’re all nervous. Hindi kami mapakali. My father joined the group composed of family friends and church mates who cheered for my sister. The rest of the family naman nasa backstage,’’ Pamela says.

Then it was announced that Katherine will represent the country in the Miss World contest. “We we’re all happy, cheering for her!”
The 2002 Miss World pageant was initially slated to be held in Abuja, Nigeria. But deadly riots forced pageant organizers to transfer the pageant to London, United Kingdom.

Katherine remembers crying at the finals of the Miss World pageant. “It was tears of joy when my name was announced as one of the semi-finalists. I also want to thank those who voted for me through text,” says Katherine, a Mass Communications (cum laude) graduate at the Assumption, who is now married to entrepreneur Jose Pio Hernandez. She also works for a financing firm.

After Katherine competed in the Miss World contest, all eyes were on Pamela.

“I was in high school when my Ate won the Bb. Pilipinas World. When I became a flight attendant, my friends and co-workers would tell me ‘why are you here? You should be joining beauty contests!’” Pamela says.

The future beauty queen ignored them before. And her only exposure to beauty contest back then was the televised pageants.

“My dad and sister Katherine would react to the answers of the contestants during the Q&A portion when they watch the pageants on TV. Nagiging topic namin ‘yung mga sagot nila,’’ Pamela says.

Then she decided to join the 2009 Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest. Her mom Norma initially got mad when she learned about it. “Hindi kasi ako nagpaalam. Sabi ko na lang ‘mom I’m sorry.’ Later, I saw my phone, dalawang missed calls from my sister. She congratulated me. Ayaw n’ya kasi ako sumali before, siguro natatakot s’ya na mag-fail ako. But I proved them wrong.”

Winning in the Bb. Pilipinas made Pamela a better person. “Public figure na ako that’s why I’m careful. I want to set a good example to others. Ayokong magpakita ng hindi maganda sa iba, that’s why I try to be the best.”

One person who is very excited about the Manalo sisters is Stella Marquez de Araneta, the first Miss International, now chairman of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc.

“These sisters are making history. They are the only sisters who competed in international pageants and both of them are Bb. Pilipinas. I’m proud of them,” Mrs. Araneta says.

When Pamela flies for the Miss Universe contest, it will be a “one-woman team” for her. This means that Pamela will do the make-up, hair, costume fit, and other things all by her self. “We have a chaperone, I understand, pero when it comes to other matters, kanya- kanya na kaming pag-aayos.” While still in the country, Pamela also attends seminars on beauty and personality development in preparation for the contest.

If she wins the Miss Universe contest on August 23, Pamela will join the ranks of other Miss Universe winners from the Philippines – Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1973). More than that, the Miss Universe title would be the greatest gift she could have on her birthday which falls several days after the contest.

“With prominent cheek bones, height, beauty and charm, we wouldn’t be surprised if she wins the Miss Universe contest. She’s also smart,” observers say. Some 87 contestants will join the 58th edition of the Miss Universe pageant.

The last time the Philippines figured prominently in the same pageant was in 1999 when Miriam Quiambao landed first runner-up in the contest held in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago.

It’s all in the family for the Manalo clan who have already produced three beauty queens. But there’s no stopping them. “Watch out for our younger sister. She’s a future beauty queen,” Katherine smiles.

GB hosts Miss Universe swimsuit competition

By GENEA NOEL ~ Freeport News Reporter ~ genea@nasguard.com :

The contestants of the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant graced Grand Bahama with their presence yesterday for the swimsuit competition, all one step closer to the coveted title.

The 84 beauties, who hailed from various parts of the globe, brought the great lawn at the Our Lucaya Resort to life with a colorful display

of designer swimwear, under the theme: “Perfection in Motion”.

A large number of residents turned out to be a part of the historic occasion, as The Bahamas is the smallest country ever to host the world-renowned pageant.

Hosted by musician and radio personality Shelly Carey, and human resources manager Donald Glass, the event opened with remarks from the Director General of Tourism Vernice Walkine, who lauded all Bahamians for their continued support.

“This may be the smallest country to host the event, but we have the biggest heart.” she said.

“The pageant is going exceptionally well and the people of The Bahamas have responded so well to our guests and have welcomed them in grand style.”

Walkine noted that the pageant is a national event not exclusive to Nassau, Paradise Island and the contestants will have an opportunity to visit many islands around The Bahamas to receive a truly Bahamian experience that they will remember for years to come.

Following Walkine’s remarks, president of the Miss Universe Organization Paula Shugart thanked the Grand Bahama community for its hospitality and noted the event was the first time that all of the contestants were together for the pageant.

“I think that there was not a better place to have this swimsuit competition than here in Grand Bahama. The view here is spectacular and I would have a hard time getting the contestants to leave.” Shugart said.

She also revealed that for the first time, the preliminaries of the competition, which begins next week, will be video streamed on the world wide web.

Following her remarks, the first 12 contestants were introduced in alphabetical order by country, to a cheering and excited crowd.

Among the first 12 was Kiara Sherman, the current Miss Bahamas, who ripped the runway in a one-piece, red and white-striped swimsuit. She and the other contestants moved to the beat of Bahamian music played by a live band as crowd members rose to their feet in a frenzy and cheered Sherman on.

Attendee Tanya Cox said that never before has she been so proud of The Bahamas in a beauty competition.

“She really looks good and gives us hope that we can have a fighting chance to win.”

Another crowd member, Derrick Martin, said compared to the other contestants, he was doubtful of Sherman’s ability, but added that after this event, he was confident that she could win.

“There has been a lot of talk about her, but as they say, you have to come to the source,” he said.

“She looks just as good as the rest of the contestants and Bahamians really have to support their own.”

Janice and Debbie Fowler predicated that Miss Bahamas will place in the top 10 at the pageant on August 23. Representatives from The Philippines, Jamaica and the United States also had many supporters at the event.

According to Betty Bethel, general manager of business development in the Ministry of Tourism, The Bahamas will receive international exposure from the competition that will hopefully boost the tourism industry.

“We will receive worldwide exposure as the coverage of Miss Universe reaches many countries and the impact from the fans, staff crew and different families who will follow this pageant will be enormous,” Bethel said.

Before the swimsuit competition, the reigning Miss Universe, Venezuela’s Dayana Mendoza, visited the Garden of the Groves where she shot footage for her final walk that will be aired on NBC during the finals.

HERE IS A GLIMPSE OF THIS YEAR’S SWIMSUIT CONTENDERS…..Special thanks to Globalbeauties.com for all the snaps of the delegates.
