CONSULAR ANNOUNCEMENT
18 June 2008

ONLY APPLICATIONS FOR THE MACHINE-READABLE PASSPORT (M.R.P.) WILL BE ACCEPTED

GREEN VERSUS MAROON

GREEN VERSUS MAROON

The new Machine-Readable Passport has the following benefits:
(1) It is based on the standard passport guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO has required all countries to issue Machine Readable Passports by 1 April 2010.
(2) It is readable by machines in immigration counters in ports of entry all over the world. It will make the processing of the entry and exit of Filipino travelers faster. There will be no need to manually encode the passport data of the Filipino traveler.
(3) It has 44 pages (the old Green passport has only 32 pages).
(4) The data page of the passport is fully printed (the entries in the old Green passport are manually scripted).
(5) It contains many security features to avoid tampering.
PHOTO AND PRICE
The background for the passport photo must be “royal blue” instead of white.
The cost of the new Passport remains the same: 200 Dirhams.
WAITING TIME
In as much as the Passport must be manufactured in the Philippines , the new Passport will be released after at least thirty (30) days from filing date. Measures are being made to reduce this waiting period. The applicant’s old passport will be cancelled only upon receipt of the new Machine-Readable Passport. The Embassy may issue to applicants a letter concerning this waiting time, for presentation to their employers or to the authorities.
